WINE & FOOD
Russell has plenty of cafes and restaurants. Whatever you want to eat, fresh seafood, New Zealand lamb, Northland organic produce, a simple sandwich or some fresh baked bread for a picnic, will find something to delight you in Russell. There is a wide range to suit every budget, including takeaways, family friendly bistros, seafood specialities, fine waterfront dining, cafes and even a vineyard, not to mention the option of "doing it yourself" and sourcing produce from local shops.
The Marist Brothers planted the first grapes in Russell in 1837. The vine stocks were brought from France so that they could make communion wine (and presumably some for their own use). When Pompallier Mission closed in 1842, the vine roots were transplanted by the Brothers and taken to the Hawkes Bay. Today, Mission Vineyard Wines, still run by the Marists, continues the French tradition of winemaking to this day.
Bookings are recommended at all restaurants. During the peak season, December through March, they are often very busy while during winter months, May through September, some are closed certain days.
If you are planning a day exploring, plan on taking a picnic with you. Whether it is a pre-prepared picnic hamper or whether you buy a selection of food from one of the local shops, it is a perfect way to enjoy lunch.
